Tech Tip of the Week

There are times when you want to use the Internet in your classroom discussions and you can spend countless hours on line, at home, searching for appropriate sites. In this issue of Technology Tip of the Week, we will show you how to capture those sites in a simple file which can be used and distributed in your classroom.

Tip #10: Setting your sites...

Definitions: Clipboard: A section of memory set aside for holding information - which could be a graphic image, text or even sounds. However, you may only hold one item at a time!

URL: Uniform Resource Locator--in internet-eze, an address or location where a given host computer or server site can be found.

Hyperlink: A virtual connection between a string of words, a button or key and a URL.

  1. Getting your sites into view: The very first Technology Tip of the Week showed you how to set your default homepage or URL. Open Netscape NavigatorÒ as shown below.

In case you didn't notice, I used Technology Tip of the Week #1 for setting my default screen to http:www.taylorguitars.com.

Now, open Word '97. We will use Word '97 to store the URLs for the class handouts.

Type in the first URL or address of the site you wish to use in your class. For this example, I have chosen to visit the New York State Education Department whose URL is: http://www.nysed.gov/. (Note: The URL site is underlined!)

Highlight the URL by clicking on the Location: field or dragging across the Location: field with the mouse. To capture the URL (which places it on the clipboard), press the CTRL+INSert key combination. Click on Word '97 at the bottom of the screen and paste this URL site into Word '97 by pressing the CTRL+V (or SHIFT+INSert) key combination. Press the return key to start the next line.

The URL site becomes underlined and highlighted in blue (default color) letting you know that this is a special hyperlink to this website.

Now, toggle back to Netscape (at the bottom of the screen) and find your next URL and repeat the process of copying and pasting into Word '97 until you have completed the sites you need.

  1. Using your sites in class: You can save the Word '97 sheet you have created onto the student (K-drive), in a separate special folder. Students can copy this handout to their own personal drive (H-drive) and launch Word '97 to view the handout. By double clicking on the sites, Netscape will be launched and the URL visited.

WARNING: Be sure to test all URL sites at school, prior to your classroom discussion, as some sites are blocked or filtered from students.

Special Thanks to Mr. Robert Markarian for this week's tip suggestion.
