Tech Tip of the Week

While growing up, we all experienced our parents bursting into our bedroom and declaring, "Clean up this mess!" Your task was to eliminate that which was deemed useless junk and organize that which you were [hopefully] allowed to keep. Things have not changed all that much. We need to do a similar routine cleanup on our network, and like living at home, you need to maintain your space.

Tip #2: Getting organized Part I - Making folders.

Definitions: Folders: In the old days of DOS,folders were called subdirectories. Think of a folder as a container in which to place similar items.

Objects: In tech-eze an object is anything that contains information. It could be a file, a program, a link or a folder.

  1. Open your Home drive (H) folder as I have done below. A couple of interesting items appear on the bottom of this window's tool tray. It tells me that I have 49 objects in this folder and I am personally consuming at least 20.7 MB of server space - that's approximately 20,700,000 bytes of storage for my stuff alone!

  1. When you right-click inside the window, a pop-up menu appears as shown below. I choose to Arrange Icons, by Name - to organize them a little better.

  1. To create a folder, right-click in the window once more and choose New, then Folder.

  1. A familiar yellow folder appears with a blinking cursor. The words "New Folder" appear, prompting you to change the name of this new folder. Type in a categorical name that you might use on a standard manila folder such as: Course I Tests, or Department Memos.

  1. For my example, I have chosen to place these staff technology tips into this new folder and I have decided to name it Staff Tips as shown:

  1. You can always double-click on a folder to "open" that folder and view its contents. Then, you can create another folder within that folder and so on.

  1. Moving a folder is a snap! By left-clicking (and holding) onto the folder (or other object) and then dragging that object to another location and releasing the left-hand mouse button while in your home drive, you can rearrange your personal space any way you wish.
